Meet The Parents

When you’re meeting your partner’s parents for the first time, it is important to remember that all the focus will be on you. BE PREPARED. Anticipating the tough questions and having a game plan as to how to answer them is a must.

It is always good to have a “full disclosure session” with your significant other beforehand so that there are no major surprises. Whether you have been dating for one month or one year, his/her family will all be assessing whether or not they want you to become a part of the family. A good way to go about it is to go into the meeting thinking of yourself as a commodity. Your job is to convince them that you’re going to be an asset to the family unit – not a burden. As silly as it sounds you’re selling yourself, and either they’re going to want what you have to offer in the relationship or not.

Here are a few ideas that may give you a jump start on ways to ace that initial meeting:

• Dress appropriately. Think conservative, yet always “up to date.”
• Bring a gift for the host/hostess
• Always mind your manners. Say please, thank you and you’re welcome
• Ask the mother of the house if you can help with anything
• Pay attention to your significant other

This last one sounds easy, right? You would be surprised at how many people forget this golden rule. Make sure that you remember, as it is one of the most important ways that you can show your affection and support.

In the end, whether you meet the family for a casual dinner or you’re staying for a weeklong vacation, people measure how much they like you by how you make them feel. They will be watching, I can assure you of this. So prepare, treat your date with respect, and follow my easy steps above. You will be great! Write to me if you have any concerns…
